That house down the street that just went into foreclosure wasn't just bad for your neighbor. It's gnawing at the value of your own home. Sales figures show that foreclosed homes generally trade for a 40 percent discount compared with homes sold the conventional way in the same market. In many cases, the discount is far more. Elmwood appraiser Michael Walsh says some banks that have held foreclosed homes drastically undercut the market when they finally let go.

Montgomery Ward, known best for starting the world's first mail-order retail catalog, is on his way to having a park named in his honor to commemorate his more controversial work in the city -- as an environmentalist.

Oliver has enrolled her grandchildren in an enrichment program called "Saturday College," run by the Early Outreach Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The program runs Saturdays during the school year and offers academic summer camps. Children throughout the Chicago area, both in the city and suburbs, have another free enrichment opportunity at UIC and other sites this summer.

Lake Shore Drive motorists have grown accustomed to seeing electronic signs that alert them to various traffic problems. What they're not used to seeing is flashing signs with wisecrack slogans. That's what happened Friday near Soldier Field, site of this weekend's Bon Jovi concerts. Somebody hired a contractor to install an electronic message board promoting the concert and JACK-FM (104.3).

Football fans in west suburban Naperville can face a dilemma Sunday mornings: miss kickoff or go the entire game without a beer. The city's liquor commission tackled the issue this week and voted to recommend that the Naperville City Council approve an amendment that would start packaged liquor sales at 10 a.m. Sundays in Naperville. Now, the start time is noon.
